10:45 am: Dublin Branch Dodder River Walk

27/09/2023

Dublin Branch RMA - TUI

 To RMATUI Colleagues

For our September outing Teresa McGill, an RMA member, will be our guide and lead a walk along the well-known Dodder River. Teresa worked in St. Marks Community school Tallaght and has lived in Firhouse and Templeogue for nearly forty years. She will tell us about the rich history and about the thriving industry that once existed along the banks of this second largest river in Dublin after the Liffey, and she will have plenty to say about the new Greenway.

Information about the Dodder Greenway.

For our guided tour put on your Sunday shoes, we will be walking along the Dodder Greenway that cost about €22 million to put in place. The footprint of the Greenway is almost entirely along existing footpaths and cycle tracks which were upgraded and widened giving ideal all year round conditions for walkers, cyclists, buggies and all the rest. The remaining sections of the Greenway are through existing built areas of the city and suburbs, either constructed as shared surfaces on existing roads or along realigned sections of roads as combined footpath /cycle tracks. A small portion of the Greenway is proposed as a cantilevered boardwalk over the Dodder itself. The existing land use along the route is predominantly parkland and combines perfectly with the Greenway to provide a very welcoming facility for a variety of uses. The Project included two if not three footbridges providing access from adjacent areas and linking communities.

Even the Bats got special consideration, the lighting design was devised to avoid significant impacts on Bat species within the Dodder corridor while balancing the need for adequate lighting in urban areas.
